Originally I asked for input regarding a distro that was not "under" a major corporation. I also wanted one that required me to learn more about linux (redhat is very "easy"). I still have redhat on my main box so that I know I can keep it up. My final decision was between slask and debian. I liked debian's commitment to being totally free. I am still going to get slack and put it on another computer. This weekend, by some miracle, I successfully installed debian on an old 133 MHZ box. I feel like a 4-year-old who just took his first poop by himself.
