My 2 cents.

I've only used a Cisco 678 DSL modem for a full time DSL connection.  It 
is solid as a rock, I've never had an issue like you've described.  Most 
ISP's use Cisco equipment, in my ignorant thinking I would want to use 
the same equipment my ISP is using.  Because it was engineered to work 
together by the company that made it.
