That way, Register.com will be forced to deal with you in court if they want their money. The court will let them know that you've indeed paid the requested amount, but that you're disputing the fees. This technique is often used when a renter disagrees with or dislikes the landlord's service -- i.e. the pipes burst and the landlord hasn't bothered to fix it in a respectable timeframe. I would examine the License Agreement you approved with your domain registration and go over it with a lawyer. Who knows. Perhaps a Judge will find Register.com's practice to be illegal, or at least not up to par with it's competitors. You actually OWN the domain name until it expires, and although some third party could pounce on your inattendance to detail, a registrar shouldn't be able to force you to pay for their services. If anything, it's bad business.
