Did as you mentioned Jay, and it shows a blank line when echoing the
$DISPLAY.
  When doing verbose mode, I'm not seeing anything that relates to X
forwarding.  If it's not enabled, I set it in the ssh_configd (or equiv)
file?  I also checked my environment, and didn't see anything mentioned
there on forwarding either.
