I received the exact same error last night when I tried to mount a new
hard drive which I had partitioned but forgot to run 'mkfs'. Hope that

Yep.

# mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/smart
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda,
       or too many mounted file systems
