why do that?

first of all make sure cupsd is running
/etc/init.d/cupsd restart

now point your browser to http://localhost:631/

log in with root:your_root_passwd

and setup the printer using this interface...

IF this is a hp printer that requires hpoj you also need to start 
ptal-init
