Hmm, it would be a bit weird for this to happen, but maybe the sound
card only works when the system is cold-booted, or maybe it only works
after the system has been restarted.  If you have a dual-boot system,
previously running Windows might have an effect.

Try (re)starting in a few different ways and see if there's any
consistent behavior.  Of course, I haven't seen anything behave like
this for a long time, so hopefully it won't just end up being a lot of
work for nothing...
