Thanks to  all who have made comments far.  I am still thinking
it over and you guys have given me plenty to think about.

Regarding Macs, I have considered getting a Mac, but I just don't
think it would work for me.  My biggest problem with a Mac laptop
is only having one track pad button. I am addicted to 3 button
mice (and I meant to mention that before) and my biggest
annoyance when using somebody else's Mac is the one button mouse.
My other complaint with Macs is vague, but  though OS X is pretty, it
just doesn't grab me. I can see how it would appeal to people,
but for a variety of reasons its not for me.  And I don't really 
want to run Linux on yet another alternate architecture - at
least on a machine that I have to purchase new.
