What sort of sound card are you using?  Is it a cheapo onboard AC'97
one?  Some of them don't work very well at anything other than 48kHz
output, while the program is likely outputting at 8kHz or something else
fairly low.  You might see if you can change the output sample rate or
try to send the output through esd or another sound daemon.

Along those same lines, the program might be generating mono audio, and
sending it to a card that is expecting stereo.
