I work for my local highschool.  I'm a senior this year.  We've got 10 and 10/100 stuff, not sure how much of what, though.  (St. Francis High School, FWIW, 10 miles north of Anoka)

chown -R <username>:<username> /var/www should do it on a RedHat system, i

netconfig -d eth0 should let you specify a static IP, for that interface
