There is more to the backup question than space.  For example, I tried
to use a CDR as a tar block device.  BAD IDEA!  CDROM's, and DVD's for
that matter, are not ideal or even useful for sequential data searching.
tar, cpio, and dump are tools designed for tape -- sequential --
devices.  A much better idea is to build select tarballs and burn them
collectively to a single CD.  Building a table of contents (tar -t) is
much quicker that way than having to span multiple CD's, scanning every
sector.

If you're doing full backups of all your files, then CDR or DVD would be
fine, but if you want a more sophisticated backup with incremental
backups, tape is generally a better media.
