I use the following:

#!/bin/sh
xsetroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktoop" &
case "$VNCDESKTOP" in
   kde)
       startkde &
       ;;
   ice)
       icewm &
       ;;
   bb) blackbox &
       ;;
   *)
       xterm -geometry 40x10+40+40 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
       twm &
       ;;
esac

then on starting vncserver: vncserver -name (kde|ice|bb)

This works for me, of course ymmv.
