Well, once the esd daemon is running, in xmms for example, you just pick esd under the output section of the config. It's similar under most apps that support esd. Not all do. As someone else mentioned, the quality isn't always the greatest, but it does usually work. I haven't heard of aRts, and would be interested in hearing how it works.
