What version of ssh do you have? How are you calling the new mail
notication program?

Sftp works fine for me with mailstat being called from ~/.login
(using tcsh) and OpenSSH 3.0.1p1 or SSH 3.1.0.  I don't think
that I have any ssh config options set that would make any
difference.
