For some of the mystery loads the easiest way to get a meaningful number it to just measure it. Some of the local surplus stores have rather nice watt meters cheap from time to time. You just plug in the machine under question and read the number on the needle. Ok, maybe more hands on then you were looking for. Us engineering types love any reason to play with knobs and meters. I really do miss the blinky lights on computers!
