I found a nice howto telling you how to replace sendmail with qmail. I've been running that for a few months now and I love it. It also works well with fetchmail. Your .fetchmailrc should have the line poll your.mail.server user "username" pass "password" smtpname "your.local.mail" I think I remember it not working without the quotes.
