    bash$ nohup make bzImage &

Alternatively, if all you want is a log of the compile, but you want to
also watch what's going on (and colorize it)...

    bash$ make bzImage 2>&1 | tee /tmp/make.out | grcat conf.gcc

You can do lots of stuff. ;-)
