Did you try using the old kernel and see if you are still getting that
latency?  I suspect the problem is your network [connection] and not the
kernel.  I use the Linksys 10/100 cards fine (version 2.0, 4.0 and 4.1).
Also, they don't use the eth0 module, there is no such thing -- it is the
tulip module.  You may find that it is aliased in /etc/modules.conf.
