it all depends on what VPN system you are trying to setup, or connect to.
personaly, my roomie has setup Vtun, which is more of a unix only VPN
system, and PPTP server for windows clients (MS VPN) with PoPToP.  I've
also heard of people doing other protocols, like IPSEC.  tho I have found
a couple of small proprietary protocols that don't work at all.. (not open
standards, wouldn't trust them anyway)
