Um, not if DRI works and the scene being rendered isn't overly
complicated..

I've run OpenGL programs on the root window before -- the GL
screensavers in xscreensaver (and other screen-locking packages) are
able to do this.  It's kind of cool to have spinning 3D gears as your
desktop background ;-)
