I'm still interested in playing around with something like this.  I don't
know if the consume.net project is really what I was thinking, but it would
still be interesting.  

I wish I could get a BGP session from my ISP.  :)  If everyone could at
least get a listen-only BGP session from their ISP, each wireless node could
redistribute those routes to each other.  All of the users on the wireless
network would have the benefit of multiple internet connections, and traffic
exits the wireless network onto the internet using the internet connection
logically closest to the site you are trying to hit (like www.sony.com).  If
any of the internet connections to the wireless network went down, users
would notice minimal disruption, if any.  802.11 with directional antennas
would probably be the way to go, unless I could get ahold of some of those
old laser ethernet tranceivers cheaply.  I got a 23rd story view of a good
part of St. Paul and a balcony to mount an antenna on.  I just need someone
who is line of sight from me.  

There's also an article on slashdot today about creating wireless networks.
Might wanna take a look at, it's interesting.
