Like Yaron said, you want to use XFree86 4.0.x.  Matrox also has some
drivers on their website that you should probably check out
(Unfortunately, their drivers page seems to be down right now, but I'm
sure that will get fixed fairly quickly).  You'll need X 4.0.2 to use
their newest driver.

With XF4.0, you don't have to rename /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 -- XF4.0 will
look at that file before looking at /etc/X11/XF86Config.
