Um, yeah..  testing, aka Woody, is the sorta-stable branch.  That's what
the next release of Debian will be based on.  It still has plenty of bugs
in it, but you generally don't have to worry about login suddenly not
working anymore (well, it hasn't happened to me, anyway).
