Compaq had a small (5mb) system partition, that contained only the CMOS
setup utility, and some simple diagnostics. It did not contain BIOS code
per se, just for some reason Compaq decided to put its setup on the HD
instead of in EPROM, as would a normal manufacturer.

They were not consistent in this; I have two Compaq machines here that
have the CMOS setup in ROM.. one is a notebook, the other is a DeskPro
desktop. I'm not sure if they do this anymore or not.
