I think I'd be surprised if it didn't work.  Doesn't Linux support like
99.9% of SCSI and IDE mass storage devices?  I wouldn't expect you to have
to do more than anyone else who has an IDE burner..

As for DVD stuff, as long as you have a fast processor, you should be
fine.  I'd be more worried about the graphics adapter than anything else.

Sidenote: Does Compaq still allocate a small part of the hard drive to an
extended BIOS of sorts?  I seem to recall some discussion about that a few
years ago.
