You must be running Linux 2.4 and have a glibc that supports large file
operations.  I'm pretty sure that some programs are still able to write to
large files, even if the C library doesn't support it (tar and dd, for
example).

A question for the Sistina folks: do the patches that make large file
operations possible in Linux 2.2 work for all filesystems, or just GFS?
