I've run a few small, controlled-subscriber, mailing lists where it's handy to actually be able to use the list to distribute the latest budget spreadsheet to the members of the convention committee, for example. Since everybody really needs it, there's a net gain relative to putting it up on a website (plus, realistically, not that many people actually look on the web site).
