the /proc entry is created when you load the alsa modules.  You can't create
it.

The documentation that comes with the alsa-drivers package is very good.
You should use it instead of the HOWTO perhaps.  It tells you how to load
the modules using /etc/modules.conf or how to do it by loading them
manually.
