Here are a couple of sections of my .procmailrc

MAILDIR = /home/john/mail

:0:
* ^TO_tclug
$MAILDIR/TCLug

Things look like they sort find, it is just that pine sees them all as one
message.  Might it be the way I start pine? or is it the way procmail writes
the messages to the file.

If it is passed to procmail, what do you do with it from there?  Do you put
it in folders based on filter criteria?  If so, you should be placing it
into mailboxes under your ~/mail/ folder.

Perhaps a snippet of your .procmailrc file might be useful.

Here is a small snippet from mine:
