That is very, VERY interesting, especially now that I have the dualhead Matrox and only one monitor... Hmm. X does support multiple adapters and monitors, so you might be able to specify which device to use with each configuration, and run X with displays set as :0.0 and :0.1. Also, look into Frame Buffer devices. That way you can definetly point to different devices.
