Thanks for the help Nate, I finally got everything going after a 
couple of weeks of messing with it.

I guess I don't have much of an understanding of the difference 
between those two comcepts, but I tried this approach first and got 
things going.

I wasn't thrilled with changing the PHP/HTML files though, so I kept 
on messing with it, eventually directing PHP to the location of the 
mysql.sock file via the /usr/local/lib/php.ini file AND rebooting 
several times.
