On my laptop, the video card seems to freak out if I suspend in X.  I just
work around it by hitting Ctrl-Alt-F9 to get a text display (I have log
messages going to tty9) before closing the cover.

Not 100% working and arguably not that elegant, but it avoids having to
reboot all the time...
