oops, my mistake..  perhaps you need to try `modprobe ide-cd'

Hmm, that looked very strange..  I didn't see (m)any ordinary boot
messages.  Perhaps all of that stuff got dumped into /var/log/dmesg. 
Either that, or run `dmesg' just after you boot..

In the boot messages, you should see something similar to this:

hdd: [model name], ATAPI CDROM drive
.
.
.
hdd: hdd: ATAPI CD-ROM drive, 512kB Cache

...if it's an ordinary IDE drive, at least..

Floppies have fairly standardized controllers (at least on x86), so it's
not surprising that it works.
