I'm experiementing with Amanda; and trying to do restores from a remote machine (one of the backup clients).
I use the following command:
[/root]# /usr/sbin/amrecover DailySet1 -s backupmachine.provider.com -d/dev/ht0
and can browse the file index just fine.
however, when I try to extract the files I selected, this is what I get:

Error connecting to tape server: Connection refused

the wierd part, is that nothing shows up in syslog anywhere. I've dealt with the necessary IPChains and TCPWrappers rules (those were stopping me at first); and I don't see any denies or connection notifications from this last step.

any ideas what to try next?

local restores work, btw. (tho I think the tape drive is dying... I can't reliably restore from tape with amrecover, tho I have better success with amrestore (which reads a whole archive to disk, where I can use restore on it).

any ideas how best to check for a dying tape drive?
