Why not just add a new group for each of the dir trees you care about, then put the directories and users in the appropriate group? I.e., if you have /virt/web1 and /virt/web2, and you want bob to have access to /virt/web1, and bill to both, you make a web1 and a web2 group. Add bob to web1, bill to web1 and web2, and change the ownership/permissions on the dirs to match the group.
